Aldermore comments on the government's housing white paper

Charles Haresnape, Group Managing Director of Mortgages at Aldermore comments:

“While the White Paper has been a long time coming, we believe it is a positive step forward in addressing the UK’s housing needs by enabling more building close to existing conurbations, and fits strongly with our view that there is a significant lack of supply of housing in the UK and more support is required for smaller developers.

“First-time buyers play a vital role in the UK housing market and we welcome additional support. The fact that the Government will be focusing on delivering the right type of housing in the right places through a new assessment of housing needs is something we are fully behind.

“It is disappointing that the Government remain overly cautious on selectively building on green belt land – this is a missed opportunity. The policy however does appear more joined up than previously. The Government seems to be exploring a wider range of options for addressing the need to build more homes through planning reform, incentivising authorities to look again, and by helping smaller developers, all of which is very welcome.”
