Aldermore comments on IPPR report - ‘Workforce is changing, banks need to change too’

Commenting on today’s report by the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) showing that Britain is becoming the self-employment capital of Western Europe, Charles Haresnape, Aldermore’s Managing Director for Mortgages and Commercial Lending said:

“The fact 14% of the UK workforce is now self-employed shows that the shape of the economy is changing. The recent economic downturn led to significant number of individuals looking for new career opportunities and employment certainties seen by previous generations no longer appear to be available for large parts of society.

“As peoples’ working lives are becoming more flexible it is crucial that banking adapts too. Banks need to look at these new norms and provide products that are simple, transparent and understand the needs of the modern worker. We are already doing this across our mortgage and savings products and are seeing increasing demand from this new demographic. Demand for these sorts of products is only going to get stronger in future.”
