Speaking on today's official announcement that the number of private sector businesses in the UK has reached a new record of 4.9 million, Mark Stephens, Deputy CEO and group commercial director at Aldermore Bank said:

"Today's outstanding figures show that Britain truly is a nation of small and medium-sized enterprises.

"Employing almost a quarter of the UK's population and generating a considerable amount of wealth, SMEs are the engines keeping the British economy moving.

"Aldermore understands the needs of SMEs and in the four years since we opened our doors, we have lent more than £3bn to individuals and small businesses.

"We welcome the Government's plan to introduce a £2,000 employment allowance this April, but it must ensure that it understands that many new businesses are still being rejected by traditional lenders for credit and more can still be done to help the next generation of entrepreneurs.

"It is important we support all small businesses and I hope everyone gets behind the first Small Business Saturday taking place on 7 November".
