Mortgage brokers finished top of the pile (31%), closely followed by your peers (26%) in revealing results, as we asked you to tell us where you seek your advice from when it comes to making a decision on getting a mortgage.

As a specialist lender we’re used to dealing with self-employed applicants but it comes as no surprise to us that those who are self-employed tended to go straight to a mortgage broker to seek mortgage advice. Not all lenders offer mortgage products that are suitable to those who are contractors, self-employed or business owners. So it’s a wise choice to ensure you’re getting the best selection of products available.

It’s often thought that getting a mortgage when you work for yourself is more complicated than those who are employed by a company. But, with the right guidance, this doesn’t have to be the case. Like any mortgage, there’s the chance you may have hurdles to overcome but, if it’s the right lender that fits your circumstances, they will usually be able to find a solution.

High-street or mainstream lenders don’t often find it cost effective to manually review applications - the disadvantage of this approach is that the borrower doesn’t have their individual circumstances considered. This could result in the mortgage being declined. Many specialist lenders find the time to review each of their mortgage applications based on merit. At Aldermore, we pride ourselves on taking a human approach to each decision, application by application. Largely because it is such a big life decision, we don’t believe it’s fair to make a judgment based only on what a computer tells us.

We also review the most recent year's accounts, not two or three years’ worth, which allows us to take things like dividends into account and not just your salary, which, in some cases, will allow you to get a larger mortgage.

We’re proud to be an award-winning specialist mortgage lender. You : can find out more about our self-employed mortgages via a mortgage broker or learn more about our products at aldermore.co.uk/mortgages.
