How I climbed the career ladder

Charlotte Martin (née Jarvis) joined Aldermore in 2016 as a People Co-ordinator and swiftly moved up the ranks to become a People Consultant today. Here she shares her career story and experience as a woman working in finance.

I actually didn’t know much about Aldermore until I was approached about a role. I used to work for a small, family-owned company and felt that Aldermore had the perfect combination of being a much bigger position on a much larger scale, whilst still having a similar family vibe to my previous role. I was so enthused by the manager who recruited me and I continue to be inspired by her each day.

The opportunities are endless. I started off as a People Co-ordinator and moved into a team lead position in May 2018. I spent 15 months in that role and can honestly say it was both one of the hardest yet most rewarding experiences I’ve had in my career. Over time, I naturally took on more responsibility and was tasked with leading a project on the people support model. It was a steep learning curve but gave me the chance to shine; I was promoted to my current People Consultant role in August last year. For me, this is a fantastic example of how being deeply invested in our work not only achieves great outcomes for the business but also pays off for you as an individual too.

‘Don’t doubt yourself’ is probably the advice I’d give myself if I could go back in time. When I first looked at the responsibilities for the People Consultant role, I didn’t think I was capable. My previous line manager encouraged me to have a chat with the hiring manager about the vacancy. I quickly realised I had the passion needed to make it work and was excited to be taking on a more strategic role. I’m glad I had the courage to speak up and explore the position.

I’ve had some great line managers and mentors along the way. It’s so nice to have a support network of role models that you can learn from and also share your experiences with. Charlotte Michael (People Business Partner – Business Finance & Risk) and Lauren Dolezel (Head of Operations - Residential Mortgages) in particular have been a tremendous support and sounding board, always believing in my potential. More recently, I was given the opportunity to be part of the 30% Club and have been mentored by the Director of Strategy & Planning at a FTSE 250 company which has been brilliant.

There’s an amazing team culture – and that’s across all teams. The environment isn’t too corporate and there’s a good level of flexibility when needed. We also have a very social team which always helps! My whole team attended my wedding last summer which I think is testament to the friendships built and spirit across the function.

I don’t feel out of place as a woman working in finance. I’ve never needed to think about what it’s like to be a woman working in finance here which is a real positive. Aldermore is a very inclusive organisation and so it hasn’t been a factor for me.

Succeeding at Aldermore is simple: work hard, play hard. There is definitely plenty of scope if you apply yourself and have a proactive nature.
