Over the past month, Aldermore has been talking to SME retailers about their expectations for the festive season.

We've spoken to dozens of businesses across December and listened to their concerns online and in person.

This week, Aldermore held a Google Hangout with Mike Moore from Ingenious Britain, discussing the outlook for retailers over the Christmas period. You can watch the Hangout in its entirety below.

We know that competition is fierce for SMEs on the British high street this Christmas. A new study from PricewaterhouseCoopers has discovered that 69 per cent of retailers will be offering discounts during the Christmas period in an attempt to attract customers and boost sales. Meanwhile, 28 per cent of small retail businesses suggesting that lack of consumer demand pose the greatest risk to their business this Christmas.

Indeed, recent statistics provide a disappointing portrayal of the 2012 festive season for independent retailers. The British Retail Consortium reports that visits to high street shops are down 0.4 per cent. Further research also predicts a 0.2 per cent decrease in overall sales volumes during the final quarter of the year.

At Aldermore, we're committed to listening and supporting SME retailers across the Christmas period and beyond. In 2013, we'll continue to listen to feedback from our customers and the market and continue to evolve our products in order to champion UK businesses.
